Senior representatives of government, international institutions, the private sector, academia and civil society will gather to analyze the sociodemographic impacts of the COVID-19 pandemic in the region and the challenges posed by the health and social crisis for implementing the Montevideo Consensus, during the Fourth Session of the Regional Conference on Population and Development, which will take place on June 28-30 at the central headquarters of the Economic Commission for Latin America and the Caribbean (ECLAC) in Santiago, Chile.
The meeting will be inaugurated on Tuesday, June 28 at 2:30 p.m. local time in Chile (GMT -4) by Diana Miloslavich, Minister of Women and Vulnerable Populations of Peru, in its capacity as Chair of the Presiding Officers of the Regional Conference on Population and Development; Harold Robinson, Regional Director for Latin America and the Caribbean of the United Nations Population Fund (UNFPA); and Raúl García-Buchaca, ECLAC’s Deputy Executive Secretary for Management and Programme Analysis.
At this event – which will take place using a hybrid format (in-person and virtual) – ECLAC will present a document that analyzes the pandemic’s sociodemographic impacts in the region and includes policy recommendations for a transformative recovery with equality. It will also unveil the virtual platform for regional follow-up of implementation of the Montevideo Consensus.
In addition, representatives of the technical secretariats of the subsidiary bodies of ECLAC and of the Forum of the Countries of Latin America and the Caribbean on Sustainable Development will report on their contributions to and synergies involving implementation of the Montevideo Consensus and regional follow-up of the 2030 Agenda, among other issues.
The meeting will also feature two thematic panels on which presenters from governments, civil society and academia will analyze the pandemic’s effects on both the region’s population dynamics as well as on implementation of the Montevideo Consensus and the 2030 Agenda.
Furthermore, in the framework of the Conference, a series of side events will be held, both in person and virtually.
The Conference is currently chaired by the Government of Peru and receives strategic support from UNFPA.
