The First Latin American Artificial Intelligence Index Will Be Presented at ECLAC

4 August 2023|Announcement

Authorities and specialists will participate on August 11 in the launch event that will be held at the United Nations regional organization’s headquarters in Santiago, Chile.

Representatives of government, international organizations, academia and the private sector will participate on Friday, August 11, 2023 in an event entitled AI for Sustainable Development in Latin America: Launch of the first Latin American Artificial Intelligence Index, which will take place at the headquarters of the Economic Commission for Latin America and the Caribbean (ECLAC) in Santiago, Chile.

The event – organized by ECLAC and Chile’s National Center for Artificial Intelligence (CENIA) – will feature welcome remarks by José Manuel Salazar-Xirinachs, ECLAC’s Executive Secretary, and Ewout Sandker, Head of Cooperation of the European Union Delegation in Chile. Afterwards, Chile’s Minister of Science, Technology, Knowledge and Innovation, Aisén Etcheverry, will make a presentation, and Eve Andersson, Senior Director at Google Alphabet, will deliver a keynote address.

During the event, representatives of CENIA will present the preliminary results of the Latin American Artificial Intelligence (AI) Index. Following that, a panel of experts will be held to debate the need to move towards the region’s own vision regarding the benefits and threats of AI, its link to digital transformation agendas and its productive, social and institutional impact.

The Latin American Artificial Intelligence Index, developed by CENIA, collects information about the current situation in this area along three key dimensions: enabling factors, R&D and governance. The index offers a regional perspective on critical issues for the creation of development and innovation ecosystems based on AI, the governance of this technology, gaps existing between countries, and best practices adopted by various states and organizations.

This gathering is part of the efforts of the Digital Agenda for Latin America and the Caribbean (eLAC), a regional initiative for which ECLAC serves as Technical Secretariat and which has support from the EU-Latin America and the Caribbean Digital Alliance project, which is an integral part of the European Union’s Global Gateway strategy.
