High-level Authorities from the Region Will Examine the Opportunities and Challenges of International Development Cooperation in the Context of the Post-Pandemic Recovery

On August 19-20, an extraordinary meeting of the Committee on South-South Cooperation, which is a subsidiary body of ECLAC, will take place virtually.

High-level authorities from Latin America and the Caribbean, including Ministers of Foreign Affairs and representatives of the region’s cooperation agencies, will participate on August 19-20 in the Extraordinary meeting of the Committee on South-South Cooperation: opportunities for renewed international development cooperation in Latin America and the Caribbean, which will be held virtually.

The event will be inaugurated on Thursday, August 19 at 9 a.m. local time in Costa Rica (11 a.m. in Chile) by Alicia Bárcena, Executive Secretary of the Economic Commission for Latin America and the Caribbean (ECLAC), and Rodolfo Solano Quirós, Minister of Foreign Affairs and Worship of Costa Rica.

That same day, at 1 p.m. in Costa Rica (3 p.m. in Chile), Alicia Bárcena will make a presentation entitled “Multidimensional measurements of development: opportunities for renewed cooperation in Latin America and the Caribbean,” in which she will unveil the main conclusions of the document Development in transition: Concept and measurement proposal for renewed cooperation in Latin America and the Caribbean.

On Friday, August 20, between 10:50 a.m. and 1 p.m. local time in Costa Rica (12:50-3 p.m. in Chile), a Dialogue of Foreign Ministers is due to take place on the opportunities and challenges of international development cooperation in the context of the post-COVID-19 health, economic and social recovery.

In 2021, the Committee on South-South Cooperation of ECLAC celebrates 17 years in existence – nearly two decades in which it has addressed a variety of topics aimed at strengthening international development cooperation activities, including South-South and triangular cooperation and their interactions with North-South and multilateral cooperation, along with peer learning based on comparative experiences.

The extraordinary meeting of this Committee is being held with the objective of discussing its strengthening and transformation into a Regional Conference, which would meet on a biennial basis in the future.
