With labour market rapidly changing, UN ECOSOC to host meeting in Santiago to advance future of decent work for all

WHAT           Special Meeting of the United Nations Economic and Social Council (ECOSOC) on the Future of Work

The world of work is currently undergoing unprecedented transformation due to emerging technologies, globalization, human mobility, and demographic trends. These changes have the potential to reshape job markets and livelihoods for billions of people. While they offer exciting opportunities for enhanced productivity and innovation, they also present challenges for workers and policymakers.

Members of the Economic and Social Council (ECOSOC) and experts in labour markets and technological advancement will come together to address the future course of decent work at the 2024 special meeting of ECOSOC in Santiago, Chile.

The two-day special meeting will feature plenary sessions, interactive roundtable discussions, a side event commemorating the 75th Anniversary of the UN Economic Commission for Latin America and the Caribbean (ECLAC) and the Universal Declaration of Human Rights as well as a special celebration of the legacy of Mr. Hernán Santa Cruz, one of the initial drafters of the Declaration.  

The outcome of the special meeting will be a summary by the President of ECOSOC, which will serve as an input to the 2024 High-Level Political Forum on Sustainable Development (HLPF), the Summit of the Future and the proposed World Social Summit in 2025.

Approximately 80 Government representatives will join UN senior officials, representatives of international organizations and civil society.
