Ambassador Peter Thomson, UN Special Envoy for the Ocean, will visit the headquarters of the Economic Commission for Latin America and the Caribbean on Wednesday, August 7, 2019, where he will meet with the organization’s Executive Secretary, Alicia Bárcena, followed by a press conference.

Thomson, originally from Fiji, is scheduled to make an official visit to Chile August 6-9, during which he will meet with country authorities and participate in an array of activities related to his role as advocate for the conservation and sustainable use of the world’s oceans.

The press conference, which Alicia Bárcena will also attend, will be from 15:00-16:00 Chilean time at the offices of ECLAC’s Public Information Unit. The conference will be in English, with simultaneous interpretation in Spanish.

UN Secretary-General António Guterres appointed Peter Thomson as Special Envoy for the Ocean in 2017, aiming at galvanizing concerted efforts to follow up on the outcomes of the UN Ocean Conference, and to maintain the momentum for action to conserve and sustainably use the oceans, seas and marine resources.

In his extensive diplomatic career, Thomson has been the permanent representative of Fiji to the UN and President of the 71st session of the UN General Assembly, during which he provided visionary leadership in guiding the preparation of the 2017 Ocean Conference (for more details of his biography, see this link).

During the press conference, Peter Thomson will refer to the work and efforts made by the UN, the High Level Panel for a Sustainable Ocean Economy and Friends of Ocean Action to achieve productive and sustainable oceans. He will likewise analyze Chile’s opportunity to exercise leadership on this subject, considering that the country will organize two major international events in the upcoming months: the APEC Summit in November and the COP25 on climate change in December.

The High Level Panel for a Sustainable Ocean Economy is made up of ten world leaders, including Chilean President Sebastián Piñera, and Ambassador Thomson himself.
