The Millennium Development Goals pose new challenges to governments with regard to the compilation and systematization of information.

In this regard, ECLAC has extensive experience in the provision of technical assistance and support, discharging their responsibility to help build statistical capacity, particularly in such fields as poverty, gender, education, environment and sustainable development.

The Statistics and Economic Projection Division of ECLAC, together with LAC’s countries, is currently developing a Programme of Statistic Work regarding MDGs.

Its first stage (2005-2007), was supported by a Project financed by the Development Account of United Nations. The second stage (2007-2008) was financially supported by BID, through the Project "Statistical Improvement for Measuring Life Conditions", an initiative for Promoting Regional Public Goods.

The program focuses its current work on the gradual decreasing of data gaps and statistical divergences between indicator values from MDG national reports and those reports developed by international entities. It also continues to aims at strengthening the statistical and inter-institutional capacities at the national scale.
