Tracking Progress towards the Millennium Development Goals: Opportunities and Challenges for National Statistical Systems
(January 2005)

The Executive Committee in its fourth meeting approved to implement an open questionnaire addressed to the national statistical offices, which have prepared reports on the progress on millennium development goals.

The necessity of a periodic assessment of the 48 indicators selected in the Millennium Declaration to monitor the eight development goals means a challenge for the capacity of the region’s national statistical systems, but it also offers opportunities to promote statistical activities in the framework of a national statistical system coordination strategy, contributing to a more effective fight against poverty.

The analysis of the answers to this questionnaire will allow us to elaborate a report for the Statistical Conference of the Americas regarding these challenges and opportunities, and to give recommendations to enforce the national statistical system’s capacity to respond to them.
