Presentation PADI REDATAM

CAN demonstration - some examples

For several years, ECLAC has being using  a methodology to evaluate international competitiveness of a country or of a group of countries related to its exports to the most important market for international trade. This methodology is based on the design of several analytical programs which constitute the CAN System (Competitive Analysis of Nations)

This system , besides containing a complete world most important market import’s data base, which has a wide spectrum of countries and markets, with a four digit desagregated commodity classification and with a time range coverage from 1985; allows an easy, comfortable, fast and ordered handling of the information.

Besides, CAN has some useful tools that help to do a complete descriptive analysis of the data an make a review of the competitiveness.

The objective is that CAN be widely distributed among public, private and academic sectors. The CAN software and databases can be sent to institutions and individuals upon request. ECLAC offers training workshops for this purpose.

CAN2000 is a modernized and updated version of the Competitive Analysis of Nations (CAN) data bases and analytical softwares ECLAC has produced since the early 1990s. It is available for distribution since November 1st, 2000.

CAN2000 provides the necessary information and tools to analyze the evolution of market shares of more than 200 countries on world markets. Data cover a 1984-1998 time series and close to 800 product groups. The CAN world market represents over 90% of total world imports. Imports of industrialized and industrializing countries may be analyzed separately. Furthermore, market share analysis is applicable to data on regional markets such as Latin America, Asia, Africa, Europe, North America and Other Industrialized countries.

CAN2000 is available for PC’s and local area networks. ECLAC will request a financial contribution to its project of development of analytical softwares, equivalent to US$ 200 for an individual installation and US $ 2000 for an installation in a local network with up to 45 simultaneous users. The Division of Production, Productivity and Management also offers training courses on the use and interpretation of CAN.
