Event held under the framework of the thirty-second session of ECLAC

The Special Committee on Population and Development held its meeting within the framework of the thirty-second session of ECLAC (Santo Domingo, Dominican Republic, June 9 to 13, 2008)

In response to resolution 616 (XXXI) of 2006, the Committee focused on "Demographic Transformations and their Impact on Development in Latin America and the Caribbean" as a central theme, for which the Secretariat, at the request of member countries , Prepared a working paper which was submitted to the delegations for their consideration. The report presents and analyzes information on the trends of demographic dynamics in the region, in order to identify the main challenges that arise for the development of countries in a scenario characterized by the speed and intensity of demographic transformations. The document examines demographic information in the broader conceptual framework of rights-based development - reinforced by ECLAC at its thirty-first session - and places special emphasis on the situation of families and vulnerable groups, as well as Sectoral effects of demographic changes in the areas of health, pensions and education.

Similarly, pursuant to resolution 615 (XXXI), the Secretariat reported on its work during the last biennium on international migration, human rights and development; And gave a report on the results of the first review and evaluation cycle of the Madrid International Plan of Action on Aging.

During the meeting, delegations had the opportunity to present their expected progress and actions in the framework of the implementation of the Program of Action of the International Conference on Population and Development and the Regional Strategy on Aging, as well as in the field Of international migration and human rights.
