The Economic Commission for Latin America and the Caribbean (ECLAC) will present next Monday, June 6, a new policy brief in which it examines the economic and social impact of the war in Ukraine on the region, and offers countries recommendations on how to address its effects.
The new document – entitled Repercussions in Latin America and the Caribbean of the war in Ukraine: how should the region face this new crisis? – analyzes economic and social variables as well as the different sectors of the regional economy that have been affected by the armed conflict that began in February of this year, presenting policy proposals to mitigate its impact on the recovery process following the COVID-19 crisis, which the region is still undergoing. The report includes updated estimates on the increase in poverty and extreme poverty in Latin American and Caribbean countries in 2022.
According to the document, the region’s economies are facing a difficult scenario in 2022. First, there is the external context, which pointed to a slowdown in the pace of economic activity and international trade growth even before the war, but which the war, new COVID-19 variants, and higher energy and food prices have made even more difficult. In addition, they face domestic contexts that are increasing poverty and inequality.
This policy brief will be presented via a hybrid press conference (in-person and virtual) given by Mario Cimoli, ECLAC’s Acting Executive Secretary, from the UN regional organization’s headquarters in Santiago, Chile at 11 a.m. local time (UTC/GMT -4).
Members of the media are invited to participate in the press conference, which will take place at ECLAC’s headquarters (Av. Dag Hammarskjöld 3477, Vitacura, Santiago, Chile, 4th floor). Journalists must have their media credentials or IDs with them to gain entry and must register in advance by sending an email to prensa@cepal.org.
