The Economic Commission for Latin America and the Caribbean (ECLAC) is participating in the 28th Conference of the Parties to the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change (COP28), a crucial milestone in the fight against the climate and ecological crisis, which is taking place in Dubai, United Arab Emirates, from 30 November to 12 December. The ECLAC delegation is headed by José Manuel Salazar-Xirinachs, Executive Secretary of the regional body, who will participate in various sessions of the global forum. Guatemala and Honduras are among the countries in Latin America and the Caribbean with the highest levels of poverty, with the lowest proportion of the population dependent on clean fuels and technologies, and the highest use of firewood. Available estimates and statistics show that a large part of the population, particularly in rural areas, uses firewood as the main cooking fuel. Although there is progress in terms of electricity coverage, there is an nderconsumption of electricity, since the most used energy source at the residential level is firewood.

Guatemala y Honduras se encuentran entre los países de América Latina y el Caribe con mayor nivel de pobreza, con menor proporción de población con dependencia de combustibles y tecnologías limpios y mayor uso de leña. Las estimaciones y estadísticas disponibles muestran que buena parte de la población, particularmente la de zonas rurales, utiliza leña como principal combustible para cocinar. Aunque hay avances en cuanto a la cobertura eléctrica, existe un subconsumo de electricidad, pues a nivel residencial la fuente de energía más utilizada es la leña.
