Ministers and High-level Authorities Will Analyze Fulfillment of Gender Equality Commitments and Progress Towards a Care Society in Latin America and the Caribbean

On January 26-27, the 62nd Meeting of the Presiding Officers of the Regional Conference on Women in Latin America and the Caribbean will be held virtually, organized by ECLAC in coordination with UN Women.

Ministers of Women’s Affairs and authorities from women’s advancement mechanisms, along with representatives and delegates from Latin American and Caribbean countries, members of international organizations, academia, women’s and feminist organizations, civil society and trade unions, as well as foundations and donors, will participate on January 26-27, 2022 in the Sixty-second Meeting of the Presiding Officers of the Regional Conference on Women in Latin America and the Caribbean, which will be held virtually.

This meeting is being organized by the Economic Commission for Latin America and the Caribbean (ECLAC), in its capacity as the Technical Secretariat of the Conference, in coordination with the United Nations Entity for Gender Equality and the Empowerment of Women (UN Women).

The two-day event will be inaugurated on Wednesday, January 26 at 10 a.m. local time in Chile (GMT-3) by Alicia Bárcena, Executive Secretary of ECLAC; María-Noel Vaeza, Regional Director for the Americas and the Caribbean of UN Women; and Mónica Zalaquett, Minister of Women’s Affairs and Gender Equity of Chile, in her capacity as Chair of the Presiding Officers of the Regional Conference on Women in Latin America and the Caribbean.

At the 62nd Meeting of the Presiding Officers, authorities will exchange opinions and positions on preparations for the fifteenth session of the Regional Conference on Women in Latin America and the Caribbean, which will take place later this year in Argentina and will have as its main topic for debate, “The care society: a horizon for sustainable recovery with gender equality.”

In this framework, a Special Session of Regional Consultation prior to the 66th session of the Commission on the Status of Women (CSW) will take place, led by UN Women. The participants – Sima Bahous, Executive Director of UN Women, along with Alicia Bárcena and María-Noel Vaeza – will analyze global trends in gender equality and the empowerment of all women and girls in the context of climate change, environmental and disaster risk reduction policies and programs – which is the priority theme for the next CSW session.

In addition, participants will report on the progress of the Regional Alliance for Women’s Digitalization in Latin America and the Caribbean, as well as that of the Regional Fund in support of Women’s and Feminist Organizations and Movements, among other matters.
