Ministers and high-level housing and urban planning authorities from Latin America and the Caribbean will analyze the region’s challenges in relation to housing and urban development, at a high-level meeting that will take place on December 5-6 at the central headquarters of the Economic Commission for Latin America and the Caribbean (ECLAC) in Santiago, Chile.
The XXXI General Assembly of the Forum of Ministers and Highest Authorities of Housing and Urbanism of Latin America and the Caribbean – MINURVI seeks to foster exchanges in order to generate a shared perspective on problems, assess challenges and jointly envision solutions, and share good practices, with a view to fulfilling the 2030 Agenda’s Sustainable Development Goals as well as the New Urban Agenda.
The meeting will be inaugurated on Monday, December 5 at 9 a.m. local time in Chile (GMT-3) by Carlos Montes, Minister of Housing and Urban Planning of Chile, the country that is serving as President of the MINURVI Forum (2021-2022), and it will feature the participation of José Manuel Salazar-Xirinachs, Executive Secretary of ECLAC; Elkin Velasquez, Regional Director of UN-Habitat in Latin America and the Caribbean; Georgiana Braga-Orillard, Representative in Chile of the United Nations Development Programme (UNDP); Reina Irene Mejía, President a.i. at Inter-American Development Bank; Emil Rodríguez, Director of Habitat and Sustainable Mobility at CAF - Development Bank of Latin America, and María José Torres Macho, Resident Coordinator of the United Nations System in Chile.
On that first day, authorities will analyze matters of shared interest such as the role of the State in coordinating and planning urban and housing policies with a gender perspective and climate change criteria, along with the property market and financing, among other issues. In the most urbanized developing region in the world, these issues are crucial for Latin American and Caribbean countries to be able to transform housing and the city into instruments for social cohesion, economic growth and the fight against climate change.
On Tuesday, December 6, at a closed meeting, the authorities will elect MINURVI’s new executive committee and will issue a declaration about the topics addressed during the XXXI Assembly.
The MINURVI Forum is the space for intergovernmental coordination and cooperation among the region’s countries in the area of sustainable development of human settlements.
It is made up of the Ministers of State and other government officials who have authority, in their respective countries, over matters related to housing and the sustainable development of human settlements. This entity was created in 1992 and its first declaration was made in the city of Santiago, Chile.
Since December 2020, ECLAC and UN-Habitat have jointly served as the Technical Secretariat of the MINURVI Forum.
