Specialists Will Debate Opportunity to Restructure Education in Latin America and the Caribbean after the Prolonged COVID-19 Crisis

The First Regional Seminar on Social Development will take place October 13-15. Organized by ECLAC, the seminar will focus on the subject of education.

On October 13-15, the Economic Commission for Latin America and the Caribbean (ECLAC) will host a virtual event, its First Regional Seminar on Social Development, with participation by decision-makers, experts from the United Nations, multilateral organizations and academia, who will reflect on education as an engine for driving social development in the region in the context of a transformative post-pandemic recovery with equality and sustainability.

The event is in collaboration with the Regional Office of the United Nations Children’s Fund for LAC (UNICEF/LACRO), the United Nations Regional Office for Education, Science and Culture for LAC (UNESCO/OREALC) and the UNESCO Regional Office for Latin American of the International Institute for Education Planning (IIPPE UNESCO Buenos Aires), and with support from the Norwegian government.

The First Regional Seminar on Social Development. Education in Latin America and the Caribbean: the prolonged crisis as an opportunity for restructuring will be presented on Wednesday, October 13 at 11:00 a.m. in Chile (GMT-3) by Alicia Bárcena, Executive Secretary, ECLAC; Jean Gough, Regional Director, UNICEF/LACRO; Claudia Uribe, Regional Director, OREALC/UNESCO; Pablo Cevallos, Director, IIPE UNESCO Buenos Aires; and Jostein Leiro, Norwegian Ambassador to Chile, with moderation by Alberto Arenas de Mesa, Director of ECLAC’s Social Development Division.

The event panels will discuss themes such as the construction of more inclusive and resilient education systems, the situation of children, adolescents and young adults during the health crisis, the establishment of an agenda of education recovery in the wake of the pandemic, the necessary skills and competencies in a changing context, and the coordination of education policies with other social policies, among others.
