Data on international migration is key to support evidence-based policies and to implement the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development, the Global Compact for Safe, Orderly and Regular Migration (GCM), and other global agreements. However, basic data on the stock, flow, and characteristics of international migrants, as well as on the causes and impacts of international migration, remain scarce or are not utilized to their full potential in many countries.

The Third International Forum on Migration Statistics (IFMS 2023) is expected to gather experts in Santiago, Chile, from 24 to 26 January, to discuss ways to improve the collection, analysis, and use of migration data worldwide; to fill existing migration data gaps; and to better inform policy making.

Organized by the United Nations Department of Economic and Social Affairs (UN DESA) Statistics and Population Divisions, the Organisation for Economic Co-operation and Development (OECD) and the International Organization for Migration (IOM), IFMS 2023 will address the critical need to improve the quality and availability of migration data to inform public discourse and policy making.

The Forum will be hosted by United Nations Economic Commission for Latin America and the Caribbean (ECLAC) in Santiago, Chile, as a hybrid in-person and virtual event.

In addition to the opening and closing sessions, the programme includes 6 high-level plenaries and 24 parallel sessions. The opening, closing, plenary and selected parallel sessions will be broadcast on the IFMS website and via https://live.cepal.org/IFMS/. Additionally, a poster exhibition will take place during the Forum in ECLAC’s North Concourse (Explanada Norte), and a series of side events will take place on Friday, 27 January.

If you are interested in requesting media accreditation for the IFMS 2023, please register at your earliest convenience here. Incomplete forms will take longer to process and might affect participation.
