OECS Council of Ministers on Environmental Sustainability highlights Escazú Agreement

2 June 2022|Briefing note

The ninth meeting of the OECS Council of Ministers on Environmental Sustainability took place in Saint Vincent and the Grenadines on 31 May to 1 June 2022 under the theme “Shifting to more Integrated Approaches for Sustainability, Resilience and Prosperity in OECS SIDS.”

Ministers and representatives of OECS Member States focused on bridging silos across priority environmental themes and making linkages with key economic and social pillars for designing and accelerating sustainable policies and solutions.

In its capacity as Secretariat to the Escazú Agreement, ECLAC took part in the Ministerial roundtable "Promoting/Exploring the critical link between natural and human (eco)systems", where it presented on how the regional agreement can foster the inclusion of vulnerable people and gender considerations; sustainable livelihoods; youth engagement and innovation; environmental rights; a just transition; response measures and a “One Health” approach.

ECLAC also reported on the progress made towards the establishment of an OECS Environmental Information System, supported through the Enhanced Programme of Action on the Escazú Agreement in the Eastern Caribbean established between ECLAC and the OECS in May 2020.
