The Economic Commission for Latin America and the Caribbean (ECLAC) will hold its most important biennial meeting in Mexico City from May 23 to May 27, 2016, where officials will present its 45 member and 13 associated states a report on its activities and will offer governments a reflection upon development strategies in the context of the commitments contained in the 2030 Agenda and the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs).
The organization’s Executive Secretary, Alicia Bárcena, indicated that in the thirty-sixth session participants will debate the region’s economic, social and environmental development based on a position document written by ECLAC, in light of the SDGs approved by the UN General Assembly in September 2015.
This document, entitled Horizons 2030. Equality at the Centre of Sustainable Development, continues along the same path as the so-called “trilogy of equality” presented by the Commission in its three previous meetings and made up of the publications Time for Equality: Closing Gaps, Opening Trails (2010), Structural Change for Equality: An Integrated Approach to Development (2012) and Compacts for Equality: Towards a Sustainable Future (2014).
Mexico will be the host of ECLAC’s thirty-sixth session, as it was signed in an agreement last February 12 by Mexican Foreign Minister, Claudia Ruiz Massieu, and ECLAC’s Executive Secretary.
“For our country it is very important to host ECLAC’s session and receive representatives from throughout the region to discuss issues of development and equality, especially of gender,” Ruiz Massieu affirmed in that opportunity.
The meeting will be inaugurated by Mexico’s President, Enrique Peña Nieto, and will be attended by Ministers of Foreign Affairs and senior authorities from all ECLAC’s member states, along with representatives from international organizations of the United Nations system and from civil society.
