How Can Big Data Analytics Be Used for Development in the Region? Specialists meet at ECLAC

24 February 2017|Announcement

On Monday, March 6, a seminar entitled Think Big: Data innovation in Latin America and the Caribbean will be held in Santiago, drawing experts from MIT, Data-Pop Alliance, UN Global Pulse and regional bodies.

Key concepts, trends, strategies and new applications of big data analytics will be presented and debated on Monday, March 6, 2017, at the seminar Think Big: Data innovation in Latin America and the Caribbean, which will be held at the headquarters of the Economic Commission for Latin America and the Caribbean (ECLAC) in Santiago, Chile.

The management and analysis of the great quantities of data produced by the use of digital technologies (such as mobile telephones, electronic transactions and social networks) are effective instruments for innovating in business administration, the provision of public services, and the design and implementation of development policies. ECLAC promotes the use of these instruments for measuring the digital economy in the region through a project that will be launched officially at this event.

The gathering is organized by ECLAC, the MIT Sloan School of Management and the Regional Center for Studies on the Development of the Information Society (CETIC.br), which is based in Brazil. Ministers and other authorities from the region will participate, along with international experts.

The event will be inaugurated by Alicia Bárcena, ECLAC’s Executive Secretary; Alexandre Barbosa, Head of CETIC.br, and Roberto Rigobon, Society of Sloan Fellows Professor of Management and Professor of Applied Economics at MIT Sloan School of Management.

The list of speakers also includes Luis Felipe Céspedes, Chile’s Economy Minister; Marcelo Jenkins, Costa Rica’s Minister of Science, Technology and Telecommunications; Maximiliano Martinhao, Brazil’s Secretary of Information Technology Policy; Luis Fernando Mejía, Deputy Director of Colombia’s National Planning Department; Robert Kirkpatrick, Director of UN Global Pulse, and Emmanuel Letouzé, Director of Data-Pop Alliance, among others.

Media outlets are invited to attend this seminar. Journalists must have their media credentials or their identity documents with them to access ECLAC’s building.
