ECLAC Will Participate in International Symposium On Public Administration in Bolivia

The Economic Commission for Latin America and the Caribbean (ECLAC) will participate in an international symposium on strengthening the public administration to foster sustainable development, to be held on March 16-17 in Cochabamba (Bolivia) and which will be inaugurated by Bolivian President, Evo Morales.

The Symposium on the Promotion of an Inclusive and Accountable Public Administration for Sustainable Development is organized by the Government of Bolivia, together with the Division for Public Administration and Development Management (DPADM) of the United Nations Department of Economic and Social Affairs (UNDESA), in cooperation with ECLAC.

The meeting provides a platform to share knowledge of innovative strategies, good practices and lessons learned on how to improve the way public administration works. This purpose is framed in Goal 16 of the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development, dedicated to build effective, accountable and inclusive institutions at all levels.

The symposium will focus on three inter-related thematic areas: ethical leadership, professionalism and culture of integrity in the public sector; policy and institutional coordination and integration; and citizen engagement, participation and mechanisms to hold governments accountable. 

The meeting will be attended by more than 200 people, among them senior government officials from Latin America and the Caribbean, representatives of the United Nations, academia, regional development banks and other relevant organizations. The closure will be in charge of Bolivia’s Vice President, Álvaro García Linera.

ECLAC will be represented by Jorge Máttar, Director of the Latin American and Caribbean Institute for Economic and Social Planning (ILPES), who will give on March 16 a conference on the challenges and opportunities in building effective and responsible institutions for the achievement of the Sustainable Development Goals (SDG), and Alejandra Náser, ILPES’s specialist on open government matters, who will make a presentation on March 17 on access to information, participation and justice.

This meeting is the result of a resolution (A/RES/69/327) of the United Nations General Assembly adopted in September 2015, which emphasizes the need to strengthen public institutions to offer inclusive public goods and services for sustainable development.
