Mexico City will be on October 6-9 the regional capital of debate about issues such as migration, ageing, indigenous peoples and Afro-descendant populations, since it will host the second session of the Regional Conference on Population and Development in Latin America and the Caribbean, which will be attended by representatives from governments, international organizations and civil society.
The meeting, organized by the Economic Commission for Latin America and the Caribbean (ECLAC) and the Government of Mexico through the National Population Council (CONAPO), is entitled “Population dynamics as an axis of sustainable development: the Montevideo Consensus on Population and Development as a tool for reducing inequalities in the framework of human rights”.
During the meeting, which is supported by the United Nations Population Fund, an operational guide to facilitate the implementation and monitoring of the Montevideo consensus will be presented and countries are expected to debate about their national experience in the context of the implementation of this Consensus.
The Montevideo consensus was approved in the first session of the Conference, held on August 12- 15, 2013 in Uruguay. This is the most important intergovernmental agreement signed so far in the region in terms of population and development, which became a fundamental piece of the review process of the Programme of Action of the International Conference on Population and Development beyond 2014.
The Regional Conference on Population and Development is celebrated every two years and the Presiding Officers meet at least once between ordinary sessions. The Presiding Officers elected in Montevideo has Uruguay serving as President and Argentina, Bolivia, Brazil, Chile, Colombia, Costa Rica, Cuba, Ecuador, El Salvador, Guyana, Honduras, Jamaica, Mexico, Peru and the Dominican Republic as Vice Presidents. The first meeting of the Presiding Officers was held in Chile in November 2014.
The Regional Conference on Population and Development in Latin America and the Caribbean is a subsidiary body of ECLAC for the follow-up and review of issues related to population and development, international migration, indigenous people and Afro-descendant populations and ageing.
